"The city's main business thoroughfare is Market Street," the narrator says. We then see a wide shot looking down Market Street toward the Ferry Building from a tall tower somewhere around mid-Market. This shot appears to be taken through the windows of the Top of the Mark on Nob Hill, where only a year later soldiers would sip their last martinis before heading out to war. That structure is still standing proud today at 100 Bush St., though now somewhat dwarfed by glassy towers. One of the most prominent is the Shell Building (seen at 0:55 in the video, posted below). "It is a beautiful and great city with massive towers of steal and stone," he proudly announces as we see the city's early skyscrapers dotting downtown. The narrator starts by name checking the city's "founders" as the Spanish settlers in 1769, and its "builders" as the forty-niners of the Gold Rush who "turned the quiet Mission village into a metropolis." (He neglects to mention the Indigenous people who called the famous hills home up to 3,000 years ago.) The Bay Bridge, only 5 years old at the time, can be seen in the distance.
